1942 - Bing Crosby records Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.” It goes on to be the biggest selling single of all time until “Candle in the Wind” by Elton John overtook it in 1997.

1945 - Gary Brooker of Procol Harum is born today.

1949 - Francis Rossi of Status Quo is born on this day.

1950 - Joey Levine of the Ohio Express (”Yummy Yummy”) is born today.

1955 - Mike Porcaro of Tot is born.

1956 - LaToya Jackson (sister of Michael) is born today.

1957 - Marie Frederiksson of Roxette is born on this day.

1958 - Little Anthony & the Imperials record “Tears on My Pillow.”

1959 - Mel Gaynor of Simple Minds is born.

1973 - Mike Oldfield plays his first solo gig following the breakup of the Byrds.

1973 - Columbia Records fires Clive Davis for misappropriation of funds. CBS sues him for $100,000 plus the $20,000 he allegedly spent on this son’s bar mitzvah.  He goes on to form Arista Records.

1975 - Melody Brown (Mel B), Scary Spice of the Spice Girls is born today.

1989 - John Cipollina of Quiksilver Messenger Service dies of emphysema.

1997 - Singer songwriter Jeff Buckley disappeared while on a swim in the Mississippi River.  His body was found on June 4, 1997 when it was spotted by a passenger on a riverboat tour.

1999 - Skeletal remains were found by photgraphers looking for abandoned car wrecks at the bottom of Decker Canyon near Malibu in California. The remains were identified as those of Philip Kramer of Iron Butterfly who had disappeared on his way home from work on February 12, 1995.  His death was ruled a possible suicide.

1932 - Singer Frankie Laine and his partner Ruth Smith set the all-time marathon dancing record at 3,501 hours (145 consecutive days). They danced until October 18, 1932 earning $600 each.

1942 - Ray Ennis of the Swinging Blue Jeans (”Hippy Hippy Shake”) is born on this day.

1943 - Levon Helm of the Band is born.

1945 - Verden Allen of Mott the Hoople is born today.

1945 - Gary Peterson of the Guess Who is born.

1948 - Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac is born on this day.

1949 - Country singer Hank Williams Jr is born today.

1953 - Elvis Presley hitchhikes to Meridian, Mississippi to perform in his first Jimmie Rodgers Memorial Talent Show.  He takes 3rd place.

1963 - Elvis Presley records “(You’re the ) Devil in Disguise.”

1964 - Lenny Kravitz is born.

1968 - Blues artist Little Willie John died in prison of pneumonia after being convicted of manslaughter.

1969 - John Lennon and Yoko Ono started a seven day “bed in” in room 1742 of the Hotel Reine Elizabeth, Montreal, Canada to promote world peace.

1971 - Don McLean records “American Pie.”

1972 - At the point of breaking up, David Bowie offered Mott the Hoople two of his songs.  They turned down “Suffragette City” and recorded “All the Young Dudes” which earned them a #3 hit in the UK and a top 40 in the US.

1977 - Billy Powell of the O’Jays dies of cancer.

1981- Isaac Slade of the Fray is born on this day.

1994 - Michael Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley.  They divorced in 1995.

1996 - A fire cause $1.5 million in damages to Eric Clapton’s home.  When firefighters arrived at the house, they saw Clapton battling the flames to save his guitar collection.
